A Short History
The campsite has existed for more than 30 years and was created by a farming couple. After this, an English couple ran the site for several years, then the site was closed and neglected.
The Petit family bought the site in 1999 ; at the time of the hurricane of December 27th 1999, a great deal of trees blew down and the landscape was quite transformed: new views and new spaces were suddenly opened up.
The buildings are those of an old 17th century house lived in by tenant farmers. The courtyard was a typical design from this time. The restaurant has been renovated from the site of the old stables whereas the reception is situated on the site of the old pigsties and garages. The gite is where the old bread oven used to be.
The house itself possesses magnificent ‘oeils de boeuf’ – bull’s eye windows.
In order to create the department of ‘The Charente’, Napoleon grouped together several communes that came from very differing geographical and political zones. Historically our commune was part of ‘The Perigord’. This ancient dependency is to be found in the architecture of the buildings and in the customs of the local population.
About 40 years ago, the department chose ‘THE CHAMBON’ to become the department’s ‘nature’ site. They bought the big farm that is contiguous with the campsite to make an open-air activities center. It’s possible to do a wide variety of nature sports on the site.
