Far from the madding crowd
An unknown gem
When I ask my friends where The Charente actually is on the map, they always have trouble describing its exact location.
You usually go through The Charente, rather than stopping there. You tend to be on your way to the major beaches of the South-West, or to the Pyrenees, or Spain.
And yet there are such beautiful landscapes to see right here.
Hidden treasures, waiting to be found
This is the Department with the most Roman constructions in all of France.
We have an amazing variety of landscapes: the valleys of the River Charente and its tributaries, the vineyards around Cognac, the hills and valleys of our Swiss Charente around Montbron, the plains and farmlands of the North Charente, the lakes of the East and the forests of the Horte-Tardoire area.
History is ever-present here, with prehistoric caves, castles and roman baths.
All those walks and visits are a wonderful prospect!
Numerous activities
Open-Air activities
There are so many outdoor activities to do while learning about the area.
Footpaths for hiking, mountain bike trails, adventure courses up in the trees, visits to caves, canoeing, rock climbing, horse-riding, you really have wonderful choices of things to do…
Markets, Farmers markets, fairs, bric a bracs
We are on the edge of the Perigord area. The markets here are magnificent: in the Springtime, all the little villages around organise their bric a bracs, every Summer they hold village fairs with giant omelettes, food and wine tasting etc…
Reasonable prices
We are a long way from the main tourist centres.
Your cup of coffee will be the same price as back home.
There’s no need to delve into your wallet every five minutes.
Entry prices are quite reasonable.
You can still meet people here who take the time to stop for a chat, who welcome you into their homes and who love to tell you about their lives and their region.
Off the beaten track
An alternative kind of holiday.
